Research Paper Topics: The Starting Point of Your Research

Before starting your work on a research paper, you should come up with the research paper topic. However, it is not the first step to make. Research paper topics do not fall from heaven. You should do a considerable work before you find a good research paper topic.

• A topic of your research should be interesting for you personally. If it is not, the chances that you will succeed in writing it are reduced. It is very difficult to write a research paper, it is much more difficult to do this if you hate the topic you are writing about.
• Your research paper topic should correspond to the subject you study. Sometimes you may choose a topic that tackles two subjects (e.g. psychology and teaching) but you have to get your professor’s permission to do that.
• You should choose a research paper topic that is up to date.
• Your research paper topic should be interesting for the audience. Do not write your research paper for your professor only; make it interesting and useful for other students as well.        

How to choose a good research paper topic

• Search the Internet. Find the top topics of research papers in your field. It will give you a chance to avoid researching the topics that are already studied. It can also help generate your own topic.
• Look through newspapers. They can often suggest interesting news and events to study.
• Ask your professor for a piece of advice. It does not mean that your professor should offer you a ready-made research paper topic. You can ask him/her to evaluate the ideas you have.
• Try to choose a research paper topic on the basis of some material that you have already studied. It is easier to write about something you are familiar with than to explore an absolutely new area of knowledge.
